The purpose of restorative dentistry is to restore a patient’s teeth that have been damaged, decayed or lost. Restorative dentistry practices have several goals regarding the patient’s health and appearance. The procedures are used to improve cosmetic factors, to improve function of the teeth, and to make sure that future issues are prevented.
A dentist will be able to determine the best method of treatment after performing a thorough examination and dental health evaluation. The exam should include a check of medical history. The dentist will also try to determine the factors that may have led to tooth damage, decay and/or loss. X-rays are normally taken as well. All parts of the mouth are checked, including gums and bones tissue. The dentist will make note of any physical factors or disease that cause dental issues before preparing for restorative dentistry treatment.
Methods of restorative dentistry treatment vary. One of the most common are crowns, also known as caps. Crowns are used to cover cracked and chipped teeth. They are used for teeth that are very decayed, or to cover root canals. They function to make the natural tooth more strong, and also improve appearance.
Bridges are often used to replace the space left by missing teeth. They are ideal in cases where the open space is between two other teeth. Bridges are constructed for the patient. They are permanently set, using each side tooth as an attachment point. They are important to obtain because teeth can drift and align incorrectly over time. This all affects the patient’s bite and may lead to future issue with a sore jaw and additional decay due to it making dental hygiene harder to properly complete.
One of the more popular restorative dentistry choices for front teeth are called veneers. These offer many advantages including less hassle than traditional crowns and orthodontic braces. Teeth can be reformed to look more white and perfectly shaped. Unsightly chips are gone with a simple treatment. Veneers are thin and are bonded to teeth quickly for a fast, beautiful smile.
