The Benefits of CEREC

Apex Dental now uses CEREC for restorative dentistry. CEREC is a cutting edge way to fix teeth that are broken, discolored or otherwise damaged. CEREC is a new way to apply dental crowns, onlays, inlays, or porcelain veneers. Crowns are caps that are custom fitted over the damaged tooth, while veneers are thin layers of dental porcelain or resin composites that are held on the tooth by long lasting resins or dental cement. Inlays and onlays are basically fillings made of porcelain or gold. Inlays fill cavities in the teeth, and the onlay not only fills the cavities but also recreates missing tooth cusps, which are the points at the top of the back teeth.

The CEREC technology uses CAD/CAM software, which stands for computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing. Before CEREC, dental restoration work was a long and involved process that required the patient to return for several visits and then wait while the prosthesis was manufactured in a remote laboratory. Ideally, the patient only has to visit the dentist once for a CEREC restoration. This one-time visit is made even more likely if the dental office makes use of the CEREC Inlab.

In the CEREC procedure, the tooth is prepped and then a camera using the CAD/CAM system takes very precise measurements of the tooth. A machine then creates the prosthesis that matches the damaged tooth. The color of the prosthesis is also matched very closely with the color of the patient’s natural teeth. The entire process takes just a few minutes, then the prosthesis is placed in the mouth, checked, adjusted and then bonded to the tooth and polished. With Apex Dental, the CAD/CAM system is helped by the CEREC Inlab, which is a software aided milling machine that creates restorations at the Apex offices. This allows for natural looking and very personalized restoration work, and of course saves the patient and the dentist much time.
