Dental Implants An Overview

Don’t hide your smile because of broken or missing teeth. Dr. Gauthier offers complete treatment for dental implants in his Northborough dental office. For most cases, Dr. Gauthier will perform the surgical placement of the dental implant as well as the restoration of the crown or denture. If a specialist is needed, Dr. Gauthier will make the appropriate referral and coordinate the entire treatment plan.

Replacing missing teeth is essential in supporting your long term oral health. Missing teeth can lead to secondary dental health concerns that could have a lasting impact on your health and quality of life. Patients with missing teeth are more prone to gum disease, additional tooth loss and even bone loss.

Benefits of Dental Implants

Dental implants are virtually indistinguishable from your other teeth due in part to the structural connection between the implant and living bone. As part of the procedure, an artificial root is surgically placed and fused to the jawbone. Because they don’t rely on neighboring teeth for support, dental implants are both stronger and more durable than the traditional counterparts. Dental implants offer patients a range of benefits including:

  • Bite stability
  • Bone retention
  • Natural smile
  • Comfortable fit
  • Lasting results

Implant Secured Dentures

Dental implants can also be used to support dentures for patients who need to replace all of their teeth. Dr. Gauthier can work with patients who have an existing denture to provide a more secure and stable fit as well as patients who need to have their teeth removed and replaced. For patients undergoing a “teeth-in-a-day” procedure, Dr. Gauthier will remove all of the hopeless teeth, strategically place the dental implants and then secure a denture for the immediate restoration of teeth.

Dental Implants What to Expect

Receiving dental implants is a multi-phased treatment that will vary depending on additional procedures required and the number of implants needed. Your Apex dentist will detail your treatment plan with you prior to your procedure and will take the time to answer all of your questions.

Phase 1: Treatment Planning
The implant procedure requires precise and careful planning to help increase long-term success. Dr. Gauthier will create a detailed plan showing the location and angle at which the implants will be placed in order to optimize healthy bone tissue. During this time patients are encouraged to ask questions and will discuss sedation options with their dentist. Dr. Gauthier uses digital imaging technology to give patients a virtual model of what their new smile will look like.

Phase 2: Surgical Implant
The dental implants will be surgically implanted into the jaw bone according to Dr. Gauthier’s plan. The implants will be left to heal for about 3-6 months. During this time the dental implant post will begin to fuse with the jaw bone creating a secure bond. Patients will typically be fitted with a temporary dental restoration during this phase.

Phase 3: Restoration Final Restoration
Patients will return to our Northborough dentist office for follow up appointments. Once Dr. Gauthier has determined that the implant has successfully integrated with the jaw, a final restoration will be designed and fabricated. Depending on the number of teeth being replaced, a patient may receive a dental crown, a dental bridge, or a full denture. The dental restoration will be customized to enhance the apperance and function of the patient’s smile. The final restoration will be anchored to the dental implants.
