Sedation Dentistry What to Expect
While local anesthesia blocks the nerve signals to the brain, numbing a specific area, sedation dentistry provides an overall euphoric affect. Sedation dentistry is useful for patients who are afraid of the dentist to not only control pain but to calm anxiety. Your Apex dentist will discuss all of your sedation options with you prior to treatment.
Depending on your needs, we can offer oral sedation dentistry, which is in a pill form. Our sedation dentistry techniques are safe and do not produce long lasting effects, allowing you to recover quickly and return to your normal activities.
Oral sedation dentistry provides a light sedation to ease anxiety due to fear. Dr. Gauthier will prescribe a medication (a pill) that you will take about an hour before your scheduled dentist appointment. Once the effects of the medication have set in, you will remain conscious but will not feel any pain. You will have the ability to breathe independently and even communicate with the dental staff during your procedures.
Once the procedure is completed, most patients do not remember anything regarding their procedure, despite being awake throughout the procedure. You must have a responsible adult escort to and from your appointment as oral medications will impair your ability to drive.
Typical injection style anesthetic can cause pain and discomfort. Many patients cringe at the mere sight of a syringe. Injection style anesthesia is often concentrated in too small an area causing it to dissipate quickly, leaving the patient in pain before the procedure is complete. Injections can also cause too much of the surrounding tissue to go numb which can cause embarrassing and uncomfortable drooling to occur.
The wand delivery manages anesthesia in a slow drip from a pen-like device. The wand, which actually looks like a magic wand, drops a topical numbing agent directly on and in the injection site, delivering the anesthesia in a much more comfortable way than traditional injection methods. Our patients love how quick and easy the wand is.
Yes. Dental Sedation, administered by a certified dental professional, is safe for all ages in a supervised environment. Your medical history will be taken into account as well as any medications you are currently on, or other conditions that may effect treatment.
No. If administered correctly, you will not be put completely to sleep. You will feel like you’re in a state that is in between sleep and awake. Your dentist and dental care team will closely monitor your status during treatment to make sure you are safe and relaxed the whole time.
Yes. We recommend that you take it easy for the first couple of hours after treatment with dental sedation. It is okay to nap or go to sleep after you have been taken home from the dentist office. This is a safe and effective way to recover from dental sedation as well.
